I have something to confess – I don’t wear mascara as often as I should (and by should, I mean as often as it seems other people do). Ever since I started reading fashion magazines as a kid, I would often hear the legends about people who just wore mascara for their daily make up and yet still had this lusciously long, defined eyes. I’ve tried – really I have – but I was never able to achieve that. Blessed with short, sparse and stubborn eyelashes, I have clipped myself with curlers, gotten mascara on the bridge of my nose and, at my most dedicated stage, tried a good five layers!
Does this all sound a little overdramatic? Okay, perhaps it is, but I have a point, I swear!
Lately, I’ve had a newfound love for mascaras and I’ve been trying a lot of different formulas to see what works best for my super stubborn lashes. I’ve found other formulas that work best for me, focusing on lengthening or creating volume, as well as ensuring that the product is actually waterproof. Although it is best not to use that type of formula every day, I personally don’t have much of a choice because I have strong hayfever and very water-y eyes.
So today’s review (which unfortunately is a little bare on photos) is of Tonymoly’s Delight Circle Lens Mascara (Curling) which was sent to me by KollectionK for review. There are three different formulas for this product and I chose the curling version because my lashes are almost impossible to keep curled and I wanted a challenge.
You can view all the different versions on the KollectionK website but that’s the one that I bought. The packaging has been updated, hence why mine is a bit different from the photo, but it still uses the original black and teal design. The mascara doesn’t come in a box as it’s a fairly basic, staple product – which explains how super affordable it is. I don’t think that this is an issue though, since the packaging is very sturdy and the cap screws shut tightly. It’s a pretty light-weight, simple design and is easily carried around in your handbag.
The brush for the curling version of this mascara has a curved shaped, which is meant to curl the lashes. Personally, the only mascara that has ever ‘curled’ my lashes is Too Faced’s Better Than Sex, but even their waterproof version can’t achieve that. For that reason, I didn’t expect this mascara to curl my lashes on its own, but I wanted to see how long it could hold my curled lashes for.
I’m not sure if this mascara has microfibres (as it doesn’t say online) but it looks like it does. It gives me a really natural looking length and darkens my lashes substantially. The mascara doesn’t clump at all and manages to hold my curls all day long! I originally thought that this product would be rather so-so, especially because of its basic packaging, but I definitely love it.
Here’s a before and after photo of my lashes. Please note that my lashes haven’t been curled manually and nor have I done any photoshopping of the photo (see that skin texture?)
I feel like a mascara commercial.
SO WHAT IS IT?
A black curling mascara that gives you a ‘doll eyed, circle lens effect’
THE GOOD
- Simple design
- Lightweight tube that is easy to carry around
- Lengthening with microfibres
- Holds curls securely
- Very waterproof and smudge-proof
- No clumping
- Washes off easily with an oil based remover
- Curved wand is easy to use
- Very affordable
THE BAD
- The packaging is a bit basic
- Microfibres (existence not confirmed) may irritate sensitive eyes
- Brush is rather long so can be messy for lower lashes
WOULD I REPURCHASE?
This is definitely a product that I would come back to! It won’t be right away because I’m still testing more new mascaras (as usual) but I think this is a really great staple product. This is suitable for beginners and younger audiences because it’s highly affordable, and is also great to keep in your bag for touch ups.
HELPFUL TIP
The lengthening really looks great on your lower lashes but the wand can make it messy. Keep a cotton bud handy to clean up your lower eye line afterwards – a little bit of make up remover or even toner can do the trick easily!
