Review: Get Lit Illuminating Palette (Mecca Max)

I’m worried that this palette will be completely out of stock after Christmas, as well as a handful other products, so I feel like I need to be throwing these at you guys so that you still have time to shop! I’m not too fussed if it’s a product that I don’t like, since I don’t need to be recommending it anyway, but for those that I do, I really want to make sure that I feature them.

One palette that I have been totally loving for this Holiday season is the Mecca Max Get Lit Illuminating Palette, which is sold exclusively at Mecca Maxima (sorry guys – this will be an Australia and New Zealand product only). I received this as a pre-launch gift from an event that I went to – a public event, not a PR one – so I didn’t know much about it at first. However, since I’ve been using it, I have loved this more and more!

This product sells for AUD$30 and contains four powder and two cream highlighters. It is currently unavailable online so you’ll need to check your local stores (which you can do via the website) to see if they have it in! It’s got a great price point and incredible high end quality so this comes highly recommended by me.

Product Description & Packaging

This is a six pan highlighting palette that contains “four silk-light powders and two buttery cream highlighters.” These claim to be universally flattering shades to help create a soft focus glow. Being from the Mecca Max range too, this product (and the rest of their collection) is both vegan and cruelty free!

The palette is made of a matte finish cardboard, which is lightweight and simple. It doesn’t feel as luxurious as some other palettes but it is comparable to most affordable mid-range brands like Zoeva. The cardboard is sturdy and also comes with a cardboard sleeve, but I would be a bit more careful if you are travelling with it. Just pack it in a way that it won’t bounce around and it’ll be fine.

Design-wise, the Mecca Max holiday collection makes use of bright orange, purple yellow and pinks – all shades which are reflected in this packaging. It’s very bold and youthful, but is also artistic and well designed – it looks great and I’m personally very happy with their packaging and designs! The gold internal is also an interesting touch, most likely to match the products – this is a good choice on their part as bright colours right next to product can make the shades look optically off.

This is something that I was personally excited to recieve and feel would be a great present! It looks great, the product claims are good too (since it is designed for a wide and flexible shade range) and it’s affordable.

Formula & Application

This palette has quite a few different finishes – the first (lightest) powder highlighter is more natural and glowy, while the next three have a more blinding metallic finish and the last two are beautiful cream highlighters that fall somewhere in between blinding and natural. In my personal opinion, these shades are comparable to the Hourglass Metallic Strobe Palette (which was limited edition and also no longer available); they are super bright and create a stunning glow on the skin. Unlike that palette though, this Mecca Max palette also has a more ‘daily’ natural shade.

This all being said, I find that these highlighters emphasise skin texture a little bit, especially if you go heavy handed with it – it works fine on my skin, but may not be suitable for people with problem skin or a lot of texture. It is very soft, blendable and picked up well on a brush, also not affecting any of my base make up.

All of the shades have a gorgeous reflect and a slight base colour, which are all quite neutral so don’t create that strange ashy cast when viewed front on. The highlighters look intense and almost satin-like on and, while it does contain micro-glitters, the overall effect isn’t too glittery and is not chunky at all. 

For the creams, I would recommend using fingers or a sponge. They are very smooth and balm-like to the touch, so apply best tapped on. It is also easy to blend out and gives a bright but still somewhat natural glow.

Longevity-wise, I find that these highlighters wear pretty well – especially the powders. They would last until the afternoon for me, after which the vibrancy becomes a bit more subdued. As I have combination skin, my oils also tend to break down all cream products too, so I’m not surprised that the powders worked much better for me.

Personal Experiences

Honestly, this was only my second product from Mecca Max (I also own their Beauty Queen eye palette that was limited edition) and I was so blown away by the quality! I ended up recommending this to everyone that I could to make sure no one missed out – yes, I love it that much. I get a lot of use out of this palette, especially because I love metallic and bright highlights. I especially love that all four powder shades are quite distinctively different (as you can see above) so that they all give a different effect while the more subtle base colour means it will work for a variety of skin tones.

They are so beautifully pigmented and soft that they would work well as eyeshadows too.

The only disappointment I have with this palette is the creams but this is mostly because I don’t like to use cream products on my face – they just often don’t work for my skin, especially when they have a balmy texture. I prefer things that are cream-to-powder but I can appreciate the variety in formulas here. Since the power products are also very buttery with little kickback, the cream pans are kept neat and clean.

WOULD I RECOMMEND?

Absolutely – I have already been recommending this to people! I have been trying not to buy highlight, blush or contour palettes lately (unless they are combined) because they’re usually excessive – most of the time, I can only use one or two colours. However, these shades are all so flexible that I can use all of the shades and the price point is great.
